Excel Wrestling Gears Up For 16^th Season in Colorado

 

This year marks the 16^th season for Excel Wrestling, official USAW Junior Olympic Program in Colorado.  Coach and director Steve Knight hopes to see another banner year for the organization.  “Our Colorado Excel wrestlers conquered lofty goals last season with 11 reaching the high school state finals in Colorado, Knight said.  The kids worked hard, put in a lot of extra time and it really paid off for them”.  A total of 26 High School Excel wrestlers qualified for the Colorado State Championships last year from the North Denver Program (see www.excelwrestling.com for full results).

 

Excel Wrestling runs Junior Olympic Programs in three states – Wyoming, Colorado and Iowa.  You can go to www.excelwrestling.com and get more information about the organization.  Their USAW Junior Olympic Programs begin in September and run throughout the school year.

 

This year, Knight’s oldest son Evan will team up with long time Excel Coach Mike McArthur in the Denver area.  Evan Knight was a standout Colorado wrestler for many years before the Knight family moved back to their home state of Iowa.  Evan is a 4 x High School All American and 2 x Iowa State Champion.  He is currently a US Olympic Training Center resident athlete.  He will coach the North Denver Excel location in Broomfield while McArthur does the same in South Denver.

 

“If you know anything about Evan Knight, you know that he has some unbelievable skills and talent on the mat.  His knowledge of the sport is far surpassed his age and there is probably very little that his father or I know on the mat, that Evan isn’t already aware of.  He is a true student of the sport and has literally dedicated his life to wrestling.  I’m excited to work again this year with Evan and his dad.  Colorado is lucky to have these folks so involved in the sport.  I look forward to our practices this year with Excel Wrestling,” said McArthur.

 

Excel Wrestling will run two Junior Olympic Program training sites this school year in Colorado.  The North Denver site will be held at Broomfield High School in Broomfield with the South Denver site being held at Palmer Ridge High School in Monument.
